Our material studies class is having its first competition sponsored by the Iowa Institute of Masonry. The winner is selected based on a project demonstrating an excellent use of masonry. Our project requires one facade system and one additional feature (fountain, bench, etc). We (myself and two others) are trying to renovate this wasted outdoor space that could be made wonderful by rethinking the drainage system and allowing for a more enjoyable social space (opening circulation, lighting at night, seating, informal venue/plaza esque). We’re meeting with a Landscape Architecture professor tomorrow afternoon to discuss allowable changes in topography, how to better organize social gathering, and what we are dealing with drainage wise. These photos (taken by Tony Gonzalez) really show the potential of this outdoor space that no one inhabits.
