This sketch represents the Temple of Echo at Baiae, a space which was once a seaside resort near Naples. The space inside the dome (a dome which could not stand as flat as I’ve drawn) is ideal for creating echoes inside. I preferred to look at this space as an instrument to measure light not unlike the Pantheon. I was drawn to its form and it’s relationship with Scarpa’s arcosolium at Tomba Brion: the curve of the central space, the projecting planes, the shadow play. In retrospect, the post completion squigglies above the acting as trees shouldn’t have happened – again, the need for a constant building of context is crucial (thanks Prof. Engelbrecht).
